The purposes of this symposium held in Rome in 1961 would appear to have been to review the accumulated knowledge concerning the myelin sheath complex, its structure and composition, as well as its diseases. The papers included in this volume can be loosely grouped into those demonstrating the application of new research methods to the problem at hand and those on the clinical and classical neuropathologic aspects of the diseases of the myelin sheath.
Certainly the symposium has been most successful in demonstrating the tremendous value of biochemistry, enzyme chemistry, immunology, histochemistry, physical methods, and experimental neuropathology in the study of diseases which heretofore have suffered from the usual fate of rare and esoteric conditions, long considered as clinical and neuropathologic curiosities.
The nature of the papers range from the highly technical material presented by the neurochemists to the straightforward clinical and neuropathologic descriptions. The thread of logical continuity is
