This book on resuscitation written by the distinguished Soviet scientist who is a pioneer in this field, Prof V. A. Negovskii, is a welcome one both for scientists working in this field and all physicians who have to deal with the problems of clinical death and its potential reversal by resuscitative measures. The work which was published in the Soviet Union in 1961 contains 336 references to Soviet literature and 530 references to non-Soviet literature.
The book is presented in six chapters starting with a consideration of the principles governing the failure of cardiac action and respiration, and progressing to a discussion of metabolism in the brain, the problem of the prolongation of the period of clinical death to prevent what the author calls "biological" death, and concluding with a discussion of the clinical methods of treatment.
