The nucleus ventralis lateralis of the thalamus (VL according to the terminology of Walker) is known to receive projections from the dentate nuclei of the cerebellum and to send projections to the motor area of the cerebral cortex.20,21 From the consideration of its anatomic connections, then, this nucleus seems likely to have an important motor function.
The present investigation is an attempt to study its influences on the muscle spindle activity by direct stimulation of the VL at two different frequencies (100/sec and 8/ sec), at different levels of pentobarbital anesthesia, and in the same preparations after lesions had been produced in the pericruciate cortex, in the medullary pyramid, in the cerebellum, or in the midbrain tegmentum. Under these various experimental conditions the effects of VL stimulation on muscle spindle activity were recorded and compared with the effects of stimulation of the nucleus centralis medialis of the thalamus (NCM)
