On Oct 1, 1960, a conference sponsored by the Department of Clinical Electrophysiology, Institute of Experimental Medicine, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, and the Physiological Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, Prague, Czechoslovakia, was held in Smolenice. The moderator of this conference was Dr. H. H. Jasper, of the Montreal Neurological Institute, who guided the discussion and drew comments not only from the attending Czechoslovakian neurophysiologists, neurologists, and neurosurgeons, but also from visiting scientists including Macdonald Critchley of London, Guidetti of Rome, and others from Romania and the Soviet Union. In formal papers the current concepts of focal epilepsy, the criteria for surgical intervention, and the results of such treatment were presented by the visiting scientists. Three papers discussed the pathophysiology of experimental epilepsy including the preventive therapy of experimental post-traumatic epilepsy.
