Effect on Electrocardiographic Changes

Introduction

Even though the diagnostic usefulness of fractional pneumography (and air studies in general) has been well established, some of the adverse effects of this procedure have not been fully appreciated. This report is concerned with one particular untoward effect of diagnostic pneumography, that of electrocardiographic alterations which accompany this procedure, and the effects of a parasympatholytic drug on these ECG alterations. In a previous report¹ the electrocardiographic alterations during fractional pneumography were noted in a group of patients not receiving a parasympatholytic drug. In that study it was found that some type of ECG alteration occurred in 100% of the patients undergoing pneumography, and these changes were more pronounced as the volume of injected air was increased.
