This small volume represents the transactions of a conference sponsored by the California Spinal Cord Research Foundation. The contributors are well chosen both for their interest and contributions to the area and the lucidity of their presentations. Although, almost by definition, the volume introduces no original work, it serves admirably to bring the reader abreast of the current concepts and directions in the field of paraplegia research. The interested student can use it as an adequate baseline and reference work. The bibliography and coverage of important experimental contributions is good. Since the total volume is so definitive, it is unfortunate that the section of the history of clinical work in the field is so personal and anecdotal in point of view. The author is an outstanding contributor to the field and his remarks deserve attention and interest. However, as a historical document his essay is wide of the mark in . . .
