Dr. Ostfeld is to be commended for pleasantly packing in 75 pages the essence of what we know today about migraine and muscle-contraction headache. In the span of an evening the reader of this book may acquire a concise and well-balanced view of current thinking regarding the mechanism, management, and investigation of these common maladies. From the position of one who has been intimately associated with the relatively few basic studies in the physiology of headache he supplies a sound critical evaluation of present and past theories concerning its relation to allergy, hormones, histamine, hypertension, menses, fluid and electrolyte deviations, and emotional states. The evidence for the existence and the nature of "the headache substance" is discussed.
