The problems and methods of neurochemical investigation are thoroughly examined in this book. Selection of materials, techniques of obtaining neural tissue, preparation of samples, extractions, and methods for qualitative and quantitative analysis of most of the constituents of the nervous system are discussed. The authors also describe the preparation of tissue slices and assays of enzymatic activity, as well as techniques for perfusion studies. Emphasis has been placed on the description of the newer methods such as chromatography and ultracentrifugation, also the modifications of these methods which improve the sensitivity, selectivity, and/or resolving power of the conventional procedures. The advantages and restrictions of many procedures are noted, thus aiding the reader to select for his trial the methods most pertinent to his specific problem. Complete lists of references for the methods described are included, but many procedures are given in sufficient detail for use without referral to other sources.
