The new edition of this acknowledged classic reference has been long awaited and much needed. The reader is in no way disappointed; the quality is consistently superior. The text is arranged so as to include as much material about skeletal muscle as is possible without lengthening the book to several volumes. There is a discriminating review of the most recent material on the embryology, innervation, and biochemistry of normal muscle. The authors then deal with the concept and manifestations of muscle as a reactive tissue, discussing in general the types of response to noxious stimuli. These specific chapters represent a coherent compilation of data and concepts which are available only in part in a wide variety of publications or as superficial introductions to chapters in pathology textbooks.
