Postgraduate education in neurology has undergone many changes during the past decade. Recent years have seen a considerable increase both in the number of men taking neurological residencies and in the number of institutions offering clinical training. Federal support for clinical training programs has come into being. Meanwhile, basic medical sciences pertinent to the nervous system have contributed broadly and importantly to a better understanding of normal and abnormal nervous function. All these developments necessarily have influenced the thinking of those responsible for guiding training in clinical neurology and must influence future training in the specialty. Accordingly, the officers of The American Neurological Association and the American Academy of Neurology believed this was an appropriate time to appraise the content of present training programs and to learn what neurological teachers judge to be important for the future.
