This volume presents 20 contributions and discussions of 33 participants of the Ciba Symposium on sleep held in June, 1960, at the Ciba Foundation in London, under the chairmanship of Sir John Eccles. Much of the large amount of research reported "rides on the waves of the electroencephalogram and is greatly concerned with diurnal, nocturnal and seasonal tides of sleep and wakefulness in all the complex circumstances of human experience." The book contributes less in new data than in new questions about the various explanations of sleep and its manifestations. To quote Sir John Eccles, "... we are on the threshold of important advances of knowledge, which will come firstly through a precise study of the modes of action of neurons in the cortex and the brain stem, and of the interrelations between their activities... and before we can advance in our understanding at this level we must also assimilate the . . .
