This is a short and interesting compendium of the measurement of human spinal cord function using electrophysiological monitoring in the operating room. The techniques are of importance in defining altered function during surgery to assist the surgeon in limiting morbidity. The methods and experience of seven centers are included. The results from various stimulation sites (peripheral nerves, spinal cord, motor cortex) on potentials recorded from the dura overlying the cord at several levels are provided. The atlas portion of the book is a sequential analysis of such potentials from the C-2 level to the cauda equina. The effects of important variables such as anesthetic agents on the potentials are described in proper detail. There is unfortunately little detail of the recording methods, such as the placement of the recording electrodes in the operating field and their securement in place.
