Stroke Prevention is a summary of the International Symposium on Stroke Prevention that was held in Berlin, Germany, in April 1992. There are 19 chapters that address topics in the following areas: etiologic classification, risk factors, secondary prevention, surgery, and cardioembolic stroke. The topics are reviewed by international stroke scientists who present original data and review existing studies.
Many chapters are interesting. The ones on classification of stroke, hemorheologic risk factors, surgical complications of endarterectomy, cardioembolic stroke, and computed tomographic patterns and stroke mechanism stand out in my mind. All of the chapters are short and to the point. However, the book has several weaknesses. First, knowledge of stroke prevention continues to increase at a rapid pace. In this regard, the information in the text reflects the status of secondary stroke prevention in 1992 and is somewhat outmoded.
