This is an ambitious book and a good book. There are nearly 400 large pages, full of specifics. The book is well printed and includes tables that are lucid as well as valuable. The sentences are clear, and many chapters contain algorithms that will be easily reproduced for teaching and learning. The authors restricted themselves quite rigorously to diagnosis, with essentially no comments regarding therapy, even when therapy and the response to it is part of diagnosis. Many topics are covered in detail, and the level of editorial control is exemplary. Some relatively uncommon entities such as subdural empyema are reviewed at length.

There is, of course, mild individuality, as in any multiple-authored text. The article on chronic meningitis includes dozens of times that the word "I" is used with an emphasis on an individual's approach, but most chapters are broad didactic summaries with a personal slant.
