This book consists of papers presented at the Morbus Parkinson Symposium, Maastricht, the Netherlands, in January 1992, and at a satellite symposium entitled "The Existing Role of Dopamine Agonists: The Search for New Strategies" that was held in Munich, Germany, in June 1992. There are four chapters: Chapter 1, "Emerging Strategies for the Treatment of Parkinson's Disease," constitutes approximately half of the book and offers a good concise overview of the current concepts of the pathogenesis and therapy of Parkinson's disease. Chapter 2, "Standard Medical Treatment of Parkinson's Disease," largely reiterates material already covered in chapter 1. Chapter 3, "Critical Drug Appraisal: Pergolide," provides a thorough review of the pharmacology and clinical utility of pergolide. Chapter 4, "Dopaminergic Neuroprotection," reviews neuroprotective strategies aimed at reducing oxidative stress, with an emphasis on monoamine oxidase inhibitors and factors that influence superoxide dismutase.
