This volume was prepared as an "introductory text" to neurosurgery by the faculty at one health center. Many of the elements of neurosurgery are considered in that context. Presentations are brief and reasonably illustrated. References are essentially from the 1980s, but they are sensibly selected, although some, such as adrenal medulla implantation for pain control, seem to be somewhat speculative for an introduction to the subject.

The brief case presentation and study questions at the end of each chapter are well-designed practical exercises in clinical problem analysis.

The index is very detailed and well organized. Introductory texts to fields as extensive as neurosurgery by their nature will be too extensive for some and too sketchy for others, but this is an impressive achievement designed primarily as an overview and worthy of screening by those who seek a pragmatic scan of the field as a first venture or for review. . . .
