Hooshmand has long had an interest in reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) and in teaching. His new book has both the virtues and the vices of the teacher. He is enthusiastic, but something of an enthusiast for his ideas. His style is lively and clear, but tends to dogma, personal opinion, oversimplification, and sweeping generalizations. He repeats his basic ideas with variations and examples, but his illustrative figures can be confusing.
His opinion is often comfortable, conforming to current dogma. It is comforting to be reassured that homemade chicken soup has more therapeutic value than that available in cans. He offers an eloquent defense and rationale for not treating chronic pain with narcotics. Sometimes he is not clear: for instance, on page 115 he does not intend to imply that the best way to evaluate sensory radiculopathy is through somatosensory evoked potentials.
