The appearance of the third edition of the two-volume text Peripheral Neuropathy is made particularly noteworthy by the extraordinary advances that have occurred in the understanding of the pathogenesis of peripheral nerve disease. These volumes summarize the field and its advances extremely well. While three of the five editors are from a single institution (the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn), only 24 of the 125 chapter authors are from a single institution, and the text includes a large number of other international authorities on peripheral nerve disease. Discussion of the molecular defects in various hereditary neuropathies is current, concise, and helpful. While the references in many chapters end in the middle of 1991, most authors have such a good command of the field that work in progress is mentioned in most areas.
