We thank Cortelli and Albani for their interest in our article entitled "Propranolol and Amitriptyline in Prophylaxis of Migraine: Pharmacokinetic and Therapeutic Effects." We apologize for our oversight in not citing their 1985 study² that also showed the lack of correlation of propranolol plasma levels and clinical effect in migraine.

The findings by Cortelli and Albani that patients with migraine differ from control subjects in only minimal ways on certain autonomic function tests is of interest, but only tangentially relevant to our article since we did not use control subjects. Our point was that there is marked variability within the migraine group in response to autonomic testing. Our focus was on the correlation between variables of (1) therapeutic response to one or the other drug and (2) measurements of autonomic function. . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
