This book is an absolute treasure—a rare example of a medical text that is fun to read, contains a wealth of useful information, and, yet, is authoritative and comprehensive. Thirteen years elapsed since publication of the first edition of Fishman's monograph on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) (Fishman RA. Cerebrospinal Fluid in Diseases of the Nervous System. Philadelphia, Pa: WB Saunders Co, 1980). The new edition preserves the best of the original, while substantially increasing the depth of coverage in certain areas. Fishman first reviews the anatomic and histologic aspects of the ventricular and subarachnoid space, its linings, the choroid plexus, and brain endothelia. This is followed by a clear, concise review of CSF and endothelial cell physiology. Chapters on intracranial pressure physiology and pathophysiology are clinically relevant, effectively relating function to disease.
