More than 200 years ago, the Earl of Chesterfield warned: "Advice is seldom welcome; and those who want it the most always like it the least." But this may not apply to those seeking advice on monitoring neuronal activity. There is much to like in this comprehensive coverage of techniques for detecting the electrical, ionic, chemical, and metabolic changes associated with nerve cell activity. The topics include extracellular recording of electrical (action potential) activity, microelectrode and patch clamps, optical and electrical methods of determining ion concentrations, and methods for detecting transmitter release.

The book is well organized, and the table of contents includes a detailed list of the topics for each chapter. This and the comprehensive index greatly facilitate the search for specific information.
