This book is based on the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held from July 10 through 15,1990, at Chateau de Bonas, France. The book contains summaries of selected lectures and commentaries on controversial or important issues. Following an introductory chapter the book is divided into two parts. Part 1 contains chapters based on research centered on functional aspects of the periaqueductal gray (PAG). Part 2 contains chapters on anatomic and neurochemical aspects of the PAG.
This book is intended primarily for the research scientist. However, the introductory chapter contains an excellent summation of the principles of PAG organization and should be of interest to clinicians as well. As stated in the preface, the book does not contain an exhaustive review of current research on the PAG.
