This is a much needed, timely book which is more than a textbook and, on the other hand, not as voluminous and detailed as the usual German handbooks. All aspects pertaining to cerebral circulation are dealt with in separate chapters written either by the editor himself or by one of his seven co-authors. The first chapter written by the editor deals with the normal anatomy of the cerebrovascular system. It is concise and up-to-date. The second chapter on normal and pathologic physiology of cerebral circulation by Linke is well written and very informative. The American reader will find not only a good review of the latest achievements by American investigators like Kety, but also one on the extensive work done in this field by other investigators, especially German physiologists like Opitz and Schneider.
