This volume contains the formal presentations and spontaneous discussions of the participants in a conference, sponsored by the Department of Psychiatry of McGill University and devoted to a review of psychodynamic and sociologic aspects of the use and investigations of drugs in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Attention is primarily directed toward the phenothiazines and monoamine oxidase inhibitors. There are five parts. The first deals with psychologic implications of physiologic drug effects; the second is devoted to the influence of drugs on ego structure; the third deals with milieu factors; the fourth with transference and countertransference problems, and the fifth with general therapeutic considerations.

The material presented does not contain any new, significant developments in this field. Rather, it is intended to reflect the points of view of the various discussants, based on their clinical experience, and in some instances previous experimental work.
