This book is a collection of 42 papers presented at the Third International Symposium on Neurotransmitter Receptors held in Hiroshima, Japan, during February 1990. During the past few years, the field of neurotransmitter receptors in the brain has been progressing at an unprecedented pace. The topics covered in this book include structural and functional studies on some well-characterized receptor proteins and characterization of receptor-coupling mechanisms, receptor interactions, and receptor regulation, with the emphasis on the central nervous system. The receptors covered in these proceedings include tachykinin, inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate, serotonin, adrenergic, dopamine, nicotinic acetylcholine, muscarinic, GABA ({gamma}-aminobutyric acid), and excitatory amino acid receptors. The multiple roles of neuropeptides such as tachykinin and calcitonin are also presented to illustrate the broad impact of neuropeptides. Phosphoinositide as a second messenger system and its receptor are discussed in a number of chapters.
