In the early 1970s, a researcher who ventured to present data obtained from neural cultures risked questions such as "How can your data possibly relate to the diseased state in vivo?" Now, a mere 15 years later one may be confronted with "How can you possibly arrive at those conclusions when you have not analyzed the system at the molecular level with single cells in vitro?" Certainly more researchers, from the novice to the established investigator, are attempting to answer questions concerning the nervous system that can only be addressed out of necessity by the isolation and culture of cells removed from the complex organism. Yet very few primers exist to guide the investigator or, for that matter, to instruct the student from a standpoint of neural cell biology. Therefore, the arrival of this text is a pleasant surprise and welcomed book for this arena.
