In May 1991, the Archives of Neurology published special articles on the theme of "Caring for the Uninsured and Underinsured" concurrently with the family of 10 American Medical Association's scientific journals.¹ Given the success of this effort, these journals will participate during 1992 in another theme issue on a topic of great medical and social importance—violence. Readers are invited to contribute articles that deal with the causes, effects, costs, or other aspects of homicide, suicide, nonfatal injury, and domestic violence, including child abuse.

In 1988, homicides alone claimed 22 000 lives in the United States, involving firearms in 62% of cases and were the leading cause of death among black men 15 to 34 years of age.
