This volume presents the proceedings of the Sixth Capo Boi Conference on Neuroscience, held in Villasimius, Italy, in June 1989. The structural heterogeneity of the -aminobutyric acid (GABA)A receptor and its possible impact on discrete functional differences between receptor variants is discussed in great detail. The allosteric modulation of the receptor-anion channel function by the benzodiazepine receptor is discussed at the molecular level. During the past 5 years, the progress of our understanding of the GABAergic synaptic function has contributed a structural complexity. Since the GABAA receptor constitutes subunits, determining its molecular characteristics and how the different subunits interact has been a difficult problem that has just recently been solved. Assessing whether or not all possible combinations of the GABAA receptor subtypes are expressed and functional is the focus of this volume. The benzodiazepine binding sites are no longer exclusively linked to GABAergic function. With the cloning
