The first edition of Dr John Bonica's Management of Pain, published in 1953, represented the first encyclopedic text on the subject of pain, bringing together and building on the earlier work of Pitkin, Labat, and others. Although emphasizing anesthetic approaches, it was the first comprehensive effort to blend anatomy, physiology, and therapeutics in a way that made this material accessible to specialists from multiple fields. Dr Bonica, founder of the International Association for the Study of Pain, popularized the concept of multidisciplinary pain management. The first edition of his book reflects this thinking, and, although long out of print, it has remained a most useful reference in the intervening years, even as texts on pain became available in increasing numbers.
