To the Editor.

We found Scharf's article¹ on neurocysticercosis interesting, especially his opinion on the increasing frequency of the disease. Recently, we have seen a case of meningeal cysticercosis² in a patient living outside an endemic area (France) who presented with a paucisymptomatic lymphocytic meningitis. Since an early diagnosis is now possible by using immunologic techniques (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay on blood or cerebrospinal fluid), we feel that those test results should be obtained in all cases of chronic lymphocytic meningitis of unknown cause. Indeed, anyone engaged in nonindustrial swine production can potentially contract the disease, and the patient's history will often fail to uncover pertinent orienting details. Perhaps paucisymptomatic cases of neurocysticercosis are more frequent than generally admitted. In addition, the existence of an efficacious treatment of the disease (using praziquantel or albendazole therapy) makes an early diagnosis even more important. . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
