—You had sent me two letters regarding "Can Carotid Endarterectomy Be Justified? No."1 I do not think that Dr Baughman's letter needs my comment.

I am, as always, appreciative of Dr Fields' comments. I take a proprietary interest in the Joint Study,² since it was the first clinical investigative project in neurology on which I worked (as a resident, under the direct supervision of Dr William Hass, in 1962). Dr Fields indicates that the data of Bauer et al³ and the Joint Study data overlap in my tables. I think not: the Joint Study data were only from patients with reversible ischemia; the data I used from Bauer et al were only from their completed stroke patients, and not from the "17 patients with RINDs [reversible ischemic neurologic deficit] and 25 patients with TIAs [transient ischemic attacks]." . . .
