This photo-offset-produced volume consists of 21 chapters that review recent progress in basal ganglia neuroscience. Although little information is presented that has not already been published in the primary literature, this volume serves to gather these diverse reviews under one cover. Anatomic concepts that are reviewed include the patch/matrix compartmental organization of the striatum, as well as recent work correlating the ultrastructural morphology of individual neurons with synaptic chemistry. Several articles present pharmacologic and physiologic approaches aimed toward clarifying the action of dopamine on synaptic transmission in the striatum. The use of 2-deoxyglucose autoradiography in the investigation of dopaminergic drugs is described, and there is an authoritative update on the characterization and isolation of dopamine receptors. A short chapter is devoted to the pathophysiology of clinical movement disorders. While this book should prove most useful to researchers in the field, the exciting advances presented are of potential interest to all
