—We appreciate Dr Ferguson's interest in our study of antidepressant therapy following stroke. He raises several questions that we would like to address as follows.

The number of patients in each clinical group listed in Table 1 is the sum of males and females. Thus, there were six patients completing the placebo phase and 11 patients completing the trazodone phase of the study. Five patients with abnormal Zung scores received placebo, and four were given trazodone. The number of patients in each clinical group is sufficient for valid analysis using the Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test as mentioned below. We discuss in the text of our report that the small number of patients does not allow comment concerning dose-response data. No meaningful comments can be made concerning the response of patients who reached the target dose of trazodone versus those tolerating only lower dosages.
