—Dr Musto's comments and observations on the persistent vegetative state and head trauma are appreciated. Our experience with CCT matched that of Hume et al,1 in that patients recovering from coma with normal neurological function had CCTs reduced to normal levels, and many who recovered with lasting and severe neurological deficits had CCTs that remained prolonged. Many of our comatose patients who went on to die had abnormal brain-stem auditory evoked responses. Only those comatose patients who have normal brainstem auditory evoked responses have a potential for recovering from coma in the vegetative state.
Our sample of patients was small and did not include posttraumatic cases. Further studies on this population will undoubtedly be useful.
