In Reply.
—We, too, hope that our comments will not lead clinicians to label ambulatory patients with severe dementia as patients with PVS, since it was not our intent. Those patients were mentioned in passing and were not included in our study because they did not fulfill the criteria for PVS. The behavioral deficit in PVS is a specific type of coma recognizable by defined clinical criteria. We thank Drs Berrol and Bontke for emphasizing the point.
