These proceedings of a conference held in 1981 include 27 contributors from a broad range of providers who are experienced in the care of patients with multiple sclerosis and neuromuscular diseases. The text offers a comprehensive discussion of diagnosis and management, particularly state-of-the-art information regarding supportive care. The information may not surprise the experienced specialist. I found the sections on bowel management, pulmonary care, exercise, physical therapy, and occupational therapy to contain exceptionally practical advice. The chapters on education law, rights of the handicapped, therapeutic recreation, and wheelchair prescriptions are suitable for patients, families, and health care providers alike. The illustrations and tables are excellent, for the most part.
Unfortunately, as the editors point out, these illnesses are rarely mentioned in the rehabilitation literature. This text should serve as a solid introduction for the rehabilitation team and others who are interested in this previously untapped population. Further research would
