Dr Layzer has provided in a single text a comprehensive review of the neuromuscular complications of systemic disease. In addition to disorders of the motor unit due to diseases of other organ systems, he includes neuromuscular complications of medical and surgical treatments. An introductory chapter presents the approach to clinical neuromuscular syndromes and the use of laboratory studies. Subsequent chapters describe neuromuscular disorders seen with mineral and electrolyte disorders, endocrine disorders, infection, inflammatory and immunologically mediated disorders, cancer, renal disorders, circulatory disorders, and nutritional and gastrointestinal tract disorders.
Dr Layzer presents current theories on the pathophysiology and pathogenesis of many disorders. He focuses on remediable disorders, and treatments are presented clearly and concisely.
This book is written in a very readable style. It provides a helpful source of information for internists, neurologists, and neurology residents. The references are comprehensive and provide the reader with good sources of further information.
