This delightful book could have been written to prove to neurologists that neurosurgeons are human. It is a collection of brief biographies of distinguished pioneers in that discipline edited by an outstanding surgeon, Dr Paul Bucy, who knew almost all of the people described. The individual essays were written by an assortment of co-workers or close friends, many of whom are noted for their own contributions to the field. In only a few instances were the subjects not known personally by the authors.

In addition, there is a sprinkling of biographical notes concerning others who contributed a great deal to the formative years of neurosurgery while working in such fields as pathology, radiology, and neurology.
