When one reads the treatment for status epilepticus written by Sir W. R. Gowers, published in 1903, "In the cases I have seen, most influence has been exerted by chloral (gr. XV every three or four hours), subcutaneous injections of morphine (gr. 1/10) and the application of ice to the spine," one should compare it with the section by A. V. Delgado-Escueta and D. M. Treiman, "The Emergency Treatment of Status Epilepticus" in Current Therapy in Neurologic Disease 1985-1986. We have indeed come a long way. Nor need one delve into paleoneurology to note the rapidly evolving therapies but merely read "Treatment in Neurology—An Outline" in Essentials of Neurology by John Walton, published in 1982, or Principles of Neurology by R. D. Adams and M. Victor, published in 1981, and compare the handling of the same subject.
