The Medical Society of London has published these proceedings of The Mansell Bequest Symposium. The editor, Dr F. Clifford Rose, collected 40 articles under eight headings: "Basic Aspects," "Investigative Aspects," "Treatment of Acute Stroke," "Stroke Prevention," and "Surgical Aspects," as well as "Remedial Therapy," "Stroke Units," and "Stroke in the Community." These cover scientific and clinical areas of stroke therapy in which advances have recently been made. Granted, even so authoritative, thoughtful, and succinct a handful of articles cannot cover every interesting topic in each area. But what they do cover will interest the practicing neurologist, neurosurgeon, internist, and general practitioner. The last three chapters will also interest physiatrists, physical therapists, and speech therapists.
Reviewing the collection reminds one of how remarkably little we know of the pathophysiologic characteristics of any sort of stroke, a circumstance that forces us to choose almost blindly from among the recent encouraging advances in
