This volume is designed "to assist the relatively inexperienced examiner in the evaluation of peripheral nerve motor function." It fulfills this function quite well. There is a question, however, as to whether such a book is needed at this price. In 1943 the Medical Research Council published a small volume entitled "Aids to the Investigation of Peripheral Nerve Injuries," which was reprinted in 1958 by Her Majesty's Stationery Office and sells for 35 cents. The books may appropriately be compared.

The newer volume utilizes the 0 to 5 system for rating strength in each muscle as originally advocated by the M.R.C., only here the rating is given in percentage terms of 0, 5, 25, 50, 75, or 100% normal function. Since muscle examination leaves little leeway for originality, the methods of examination for particular muscle functions are similar in the two books, and the photographs illustrating the proper mode of . . .
