The author states that the purpose of the investigation upon which this small monograph is based was to search for the endogenous predisposition to postvaccinial encephalitis in an attempt to bring the problem closer to a solution. Unfortunately, from the data presented this reviewer could not be convinced that an endogenous predisposition to this disease had been discovered or that the problem was any closer to a solution.

The first 2 chapters of the monograph are devoted to an interesting historical survey of smallpox, vaccination, and the political difficulties encountered in relation to the latter in the Netherlands. Despite vigorous opposition from certain religious groups, the first law requiring vaccination of pupils and teachers in elementary schools, volunteers in charitable institutions, prisoners, and military personnel was passed in 1872.
