Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage collects data currently available from serial cooperative trials concerned with ruptured intracranial aneurysms. Six of the 18 chapters have been published in Stroke. Read sequentially, it is clear that each new trial introduced earlier experience, unanswered questions, and concurrent therapeutic approaches. Predictably, much of the material in the book was more or less familiar, but I found the review quite informative.
The data in this book represent the largest single source of information on the subject. Despite objections to the dismal surgical results that reflected the pooled experience of neurosurgeons who participated in the initial randomized trial, the accumulated results of these trials (referred to as phases I to VII) must eventually influence surgical and medical management and generate questions that will be the basis for new laboratory and clinical investigations.
The unevenness of the writing of the various chapters reflects the multiauthored nature of this collection
