This book, by 20 contributing authors from the medical specialities of endocrinology, neurosurgery, neuropathology, and neuroradiology, is a current comprehensive review of the diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatment of pituitary adenomas.
The authors review the hypothalamic-pituitary interrelationships with particular emphasis on anatomy, and neurotransmitter regulation of hypophysiotropic neurons. The material treating hypophysiotropic anterior pituitary gland hormone synthesis, transport, and secretory regulation is clearly and concisely written. Evidence is reviewed relevant to pituitary vs hypothalamic etiology of pituitary tumors. The current pathologic classification of pituitary tumors based on immunologic staining and electron microscopy is well illustrated and contrasted to the traditional light microscope classification of these tumors.
The symptoms and physical findings, endocrine assay abnormalities, and diagnostic endocrine tests are detailed for prolactin, growth hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone, thyrotropic and gonadotropic hormone secretory adenomas, as well as nonsecreting pituitary tumors. This comprehensive review includes diagnostic neuroradiologic studies, ophthalmologic evaluation, and alterations in CSF
