This well-written book is sufficiently comprehensive to be considered for use as a textbook on infections of the CNS. The first chapter provides a general view of infections, epidemiology, methods of diagnosis, and modes of treatment. Subsequent chapters cover bacterial, viral, mycotic, and parasitic infections. Conditions of particular interest in South America, such as cysticercosis and trypanosomiasis of the CNS, are thoroughly discussed. Frenkel's chapter on toxoplasmosis is outstanding. The neuropathologic illustrations are excellent and will be instructive to those who are not acquainted with certain types of infections.
For a number of reasons, it is almost inevitable that a scientific book published in Latin America will be somewhat out of date by the time it reaches the market.
