Although this book was written specifically for the medicinal chemist, other individuals interested in the treatment of epilepsy should find it of value. The first chapter provides an historical overview of the advances in anticonvulsant drug development. Chapter 2 provides an overview of the clinical aspects of epilepsy, with emphasis on the classification of seizures, a brief discussion of the neurochemistry and neurophysiology of seizures, a short section on the mechanism of anticonvulsant drug action, and a discussion of the therapeutic use of the major classifications of anticonvulsant drugs. The third chapter deals with the experimental evaluation of anticonvulsants and briefly describes the experimental methods utilized to produce seizures. The remainder of the chapter presents tabular data of the responses of various classes of antiepileptic drugs to certain tests, along with appropriate references. These tables summarize data that are widely scattered in the literature and are of value in comparing
