To the Editor.—
Total creatine kinase (CK) activity in serum tends to be increased after generalized seizures. We found a postictal increase of total CK activity in 14 of 17 patients admitted in the wake of one or more generalized seizures. Only one of the 14 patients with elevated levels of CK was receiving regular antiepileptic treatment, whereas two of the three patients with normal levels of CK were. Absence of antiepileptic treatment prior to admission to the hospital is significantly correlated to elevated levels of the enzyme (P <.01). Antiepileptic treatment may diminish the intensity and duration of convulsions to a degree to where no CK is released.
There was no correlation between elevated levels of CK and ictal injuries, such as tongue biting or bodily injuries from falling. The maximum value of CK activity was found on the third and fourth postictal day in ten of the 14
