McEntee et al quite appropriately call attention to the fact that severe memory disorders are associated with thalamic lesions that apparently spare the mammillary bodies and its connections as demonstrated by their case. At the time of preparation of our report, we were unaware of their case report, which, clinically, is indeed closely similar to ours.

We accept the comment contained in their article and letter as an important correction to our article. Sudden onset of severe memory disturbance usually implies lesions in the areas adjacent to the third ventricle, but to say that the damage is "undoubtedly" anterior—namely, in the hippocampalfornix-mammillary circuits—is probably to overstate the case. . . .
