After years of being largely limited to Frank Ford's classic textbook of child neurology, suddenly there has been a proliferation of competing volumes. Medical students and pediatricians, but few neurologists, have been aware of the excellent section on pediatric neurology in Barnett's Pediatrics. This 195-page chapter, edited by Drs Sidney Carter and Arnold Gold, assisted by 19 collaborators, has been reprinted in the form of a textbook of child neurology. The authors have produced a remarkably complete, clear, clinically oriented volume. The organization is by traditional, general categories of neurological disease, and better adapted to reading about a disease than arriving at a differential diagnosis. Illustrations and charts are excellent, and each chapter is followed by a series of references designed for supplemental reading. Unfortunately, most of the references were published prior to 1970.
