The recent appearance of four new books on pain and its management suggest either that there are startling advances in our understanding of this clinical symptom that require dissemination to the medical public or that the intractability of the problem prompts seminars, symposia, and large quantities of printed material. A perusal of these four books, two of which are the proceedings of symposia, suggests that the latter explanation is more true than the former and that the problem of pain remains a difficult and frustrating one for the clinician. These books, however, do serve the purpose of presenting to the clinician the considerable advances in our understanding of the physiological basis
